Congratulations to Michelle LaRocca, a fifth-grade student at James Vernon Middle School for being selected one of the five winners in the Sports Commission's Essay and Poster Contest.
The contest focused on the topic of sportsmanship. This event was sponsored by the Youth Committee of the Nassau County Sports Commission and the NY Mets/Sharp Electronics Student Athlete Leadership Team. On Saturday, Nov. 15, Michelle was honored at an awards ceremony at the Adelphi University Alumni house in Garden City. A proclamation from the county, along with special prizes from the New York Mets were distributed.
The Youth Committee feels sportsmanship is an important issue for students to discuss and understand. And most importantly, fair play and team work are lessons not only for school and the playing field, but also for life.
Michelle's closing paragraph to her essay was: When there were arguments no one went home happy. The lesson I have learned over the past couple of years is by being a good sport you are always a winner!
