From July 6 to July 10, the “Greater New York Sandlot Baseball Classic” will take place, matching thirty of the metro area’s best 18-year-old baseball players in a five-game tournament against Team USA Baseball’s 18U National Team in locations throughout the New York area. The event will be sponsored by the New York Mets, among others, and has historic roots and alumni such as greats like Manny Ramirez, Al Kaline and Joe Torre.
Mineola resident Mike Martin has recently been named to the team after rigorous try-outs throughout the past month. From 7,500 eligible players, 240 were selected. That group was cut down to 50 two weeks ago and now completed the roster with 30.
