Two 8-0 teams in the third-grade Mineola Chiefs and third-grade Belmore Braves faced off at the Lacrosse Jamboree held at Farmingdale College on June 13. It could have gone either way but ended in a 12-9 Chiefs victory as Mineola captured its first ever championship.
On a hot Sunday, the Chiefs scoring was produced by midfielders Michael O’Connell (6 goals, 3 assists), Jason Eccher (1 goal) and Attackmen Thomas Albig (3 goals, 1 assist), Liam Gormley (1 goal) and Marc Chiappone (1 goal).
Chiefs Midfielders Matt Sluka (1 assist), Jack Duff and Darien Lloyd battled hard and beat the Braves to ground balls to help control the tempo of the game. Chiefs Attackmen Joey Ruscillo and Jack O’Brien (1 assist) controlled the ball in the offensive zone to keep the heat on the Braves goalie.
Chiefs Defensemen Michael Laginestra, Matt Grimm, Nicholas Monteforte and Philip Arnold hammered the Braves and put a solid wall up in front of the net. Matty O’Connell made his debut in goal. He made saves with all parts of his body in the victory.
