The Mineola Lightning girl’s minors softball team kept its streak alive, beating a tough Garden City Orange team. Mineola’s offense took some of the pressure off pitchers Tierney Fitzgerald and Shannon Durham, with Samantha Marcia, Stella Davis, Vallerie Cobos, Kellie Cassidy and Courtney Scheuer all driving in runs in the Lightning’s 11-5 win. There were also some key defensive plays by Victoria Ondris, Hannah Hoyt, Kayla Orefice and Lyndsey Reuther that helped Mineola get off the field. Christina Benintendi, Angelina Filpo-Toscano, Sara McCarthy and the injured Angie Morelli complete the team.
The Girls U11 Mineola Mini-Mustangs fell three goals behind early in their game against the Elmont Raging Fire. The second half saw spirited play from the resilient Mini’s and within a few minutes, Casey Conners drilled home a perfect cross from Allison Lamonica to get Mineola on the board. With Elmont’s defense tightening, Mineola’s Gretchen Keller seemingly scored to bring Mineola within a goal, only to have the goal waved off for not completely crossing the goal line. Elmont pushed home two other goals in its decisive 5-1 win.
