The Mineola High School varsity wrestling team won the 2009 Hank Paris Wrestling Tournament, finishing with156 points as 10 of the 13 boys entered finished in the top four. Calhoun and Plainedge finished in second and third respectively with133 and 115 Points. Senior co-captain Arnold Gomez led the way for the Mustangs as the 171-pound champion. The rest of the place winners were as follows:
Senior Nick Grimaldi - 2nd place 112 pounds
Freshman Matt Long - 2nd place 135 pounds
Senior Tyler Cashin - 2nd place 145 pounds
Senior Mike Cardillo - 2nd place 119 pounds
Senior Mike Escobar - 3rd place 171 pounds
Junior Mike Cerqueira - 3rd place 285 pounds
Junior Nick Fabiano - 4th place 125 pounds
Junior Steve O’Connor - 4th place 152 pounds
Junior Chris Euell - 4th place 171 pounds
Senior Bill Gerstner and junior Joe Barcos withdrew from the tournament due to some minor injuries and first year senior John Vega did not place.
The Mustangs are hoping for improvement over last year as they finished second in their league. This year has started out on a positive note with a larger than usual turnout of 36 boys on junior varsity and varsity. The practices have been going very well with all the boys working very hard.
The team hopes to build on this tournament victory and carry it forward for the rest of the season. Some of the JV boys also did well in the JV section of the tournament. Sophomore Dave Valmond got the Mustangs going as the 140-pound champion. The other JV place winners were:
Freshman Yosh Amaya - 2nd place 103 pounds
Freshman Joe Dasilva - 2nd place 130 pounds
Freshman Luigi Miranda – 2nd place 135 pounds
Freshman Kevin Merino - 2nd place 152 pounds
Sophomore Joe Massaro - 3rd place 152 pounds
1st year senior Pedro Dalcolmo - 2nd place 171 pounds
Over the next few weeks, the boys will compete in the tough Bethpage Dad’s Club and the Valley Stream North Ralph Jansen Tournament. The Mustangs are hoping to enter a few more boys next week as they become eligible to compete .The rest of the team is as follows

Sophomores – Dave Gorry, Willie Cashin and Bruno Ferreira.
Juniors - Mike Ianelli, Dom Vigario, Pat Clark amd Andrew Portillo.
Seniors – Dan Granados and Peter Granath.
