The Chiefs 8-year-olds won a tight one 19-18 this past Sunday at home over the East Rockaway Raiders. The Chiefs are now playoff bound as this victory brings their winning record to 8-1 for the season.
The Chiefs’ offense controlled the ball with great blocking by the offensive line centered by Michael LaGinestra and anchored by Kevin Parente, Michael Sinisi, Joe Martello, Andrew Cho, with tight ends Jason Eccher and Lance Costa. Key runs by running backs Thomas Albig, Jack Duff, Andrew Casoria and Michael O’Connell helped the Chiefs’ offense control the ball, along with first time starting quarterback Matt Sluka.
The Chiefs’ defense made gang tackles all over the field. The defensive line of Parente, Aidan Hornberger, Jeremy Samuel, Matty O’Connell, Philip Arnold, Dylan Vincenti and Spenser Warantz kept the heat and pressure on East Rockaway’s offense throughout the day. Linebackers and cornerbacks attacked the ball and finished off the Raiders; they were led by Albig, Andrew Casoria, Anthony Giunta, Patrick McTiernan and Ryan Calderone.
Arnold and Michael O’Connell made a big defensive stop on the last play of the game, a game tying extra point when they tackled the Raider running back in the backfield to hold onto the 19-18 victory.
Once again all the boys played and participated in the victory. Scoring is summarized as follows:
• Matt Sluka: 30-yard touchdown run (xpoint run by Michael O’Connell)
• Michael O’Connell: 52-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)
• Jack Duff: 17-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)
