Seniors Emily Glenn (51 goals), Emily Kain (43 goals, 34 assists), Mo Phelan (34 goals, 11 assists), Melissa Pastoressa (24 goals) and Caitlyn Taveira (112 saves and an average of only 6 goals allowed) had something to prove this year and capitalized on their commitment.
The Lady Mustangs take an unblemished conference record into the Class C playoffs looking to end their careers on a positive note. With Junior Sami Stavish’s 61 goals leading the way, the girls automatic bid via the Conference II championship forces longtime head coach Frank Massaro to “skirt” steaks at the season-ending dinner.
Following through on a March promise to his goalie Taveira, chef Massaro will be barbecuing filet mignon at a season-ending picnic not with an apron draped around his waist, but rather an extra large Mustang uniform — complete with pleated skirt!
The team is primed for the playoffs by taking all prisoners in league play and nearly upsetting Conference I opponent Division in a one-goal, double overtime loss in one of the season’s final contests.
“After that game, Conference I [took notice],” said Phelan.
After suffering through a tough conference season fraught with injuries in 2008 when Mineola was underestimated, Pastoressa noted, “We were tired of losing.”
This year, the Mustangs proved the streak was over.
“If we win the county [title], he has to wear the uniform to school” joked Kain about her coach.
Something tells us Massaro really wouldn’t mind and what a graduation present for a talented group of determined seniors.
