Mineola Hurricanes lost a battle of the bats on Sunday, June 29, at St. Joseph’s Field in Kings Park, falling short in a 9-8 ball game against the St. Joseph’s Saints in the first game of a doubleheader.
The top of the first saw the Hurricanes take an early 2-0 lead. The runs came home for the Hurricanes when T.J. McManus scored on an error and Connor Eakin scored on a fielder’s choice. The Saints never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring five runs on two errors and an RBI single by Jonathan.
Two runs in the top of the second helped the Hurricanes close its deficit to 5-4. A fielder’s choice set off the Hurricanes rally. Finally, Jack got McManus to ground out to end the threat.
The Saints added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nick kicked things off with a double, bringing home Aidan, Ryan and Nicky.
Four runs in the top of the sixth helped the Hurricanes close its deficit to 9-8. An RBI single by Phil Macchietto, a two-run single by Andrew Pizzardi, and a fielder’s choice fueled the Hurricanes’ comeback. Jake got Dominick Ferreira to strike out to end the game.
Pizzardi went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Hurricanes. He singled in the second, fourth, and sixth innings. Jake got the win in relief for St. Joseph’s Saints. Jake pitched one inning and allowed no runs.
St. Joseph’s Saints was sparked by Nick and Jonathan, who teamed up for five hits and five RBIs. Macchietto took the loss for Mineola Hurricanes. He lasted just three innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed four runs.
The Mineola Hurricanes came out firing, but couldn’t hang on to the lead, ending up on the losing side of a 7-5 ball game against the St. Joseph’s Saints in game two of the double header.
In the bottom of the first, the Hurricanes got things going when T.J. McManus singled. A stolen base then moved McManus from first to second. Kevin Pusey singled, plating McManus. Pusey scored on a ground out by Blake Bastos to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.
The Saints took the lead in the third inning when Nick doubled to centerfield plating Jonathan B and then scoring on a throwing error to go up 3-2.
The Hurricanes survived the Saints’ surge and put up three runs of its own in the third. Mineola Hurricanes scored on a three-run home run by Pusey to go ahead 5-3. The Saints got two runs in the sixth to tie the game with an RBI Triple by Derek and an RBI Single by Jack.
In the top of the seventh, the Saints, Nicky and Ryan, scored on a two-run error to pad their lead. Kevin Pusey racked up four RBIs on two hits for the Hurricanes. He singled in the first inning and homered in the third inning. John got the win in relief for St. Joseph’s Saints. John pitched four innings and allowed no runs.
