The Mineola Mustangs Softball team completed an excellent season with two exciting games in the Nassau County Playoffs.
The Lady Mustangs met Floral Park in the first round of the playoffs on Friday, May 16, beating the Spartans 8-4.
It was the third meeting of the season with Floral Park, with Mineola winning the first two games.
The Mustangs jump out to an early 5-1 lead that included a two-run triple from Valerie Fischer in the top of the third inning. Floral Park fought back to come within one run of tying the game making it 5-4 at the end of six innings played.
Kati Priolo sealed the win for Mineola with a two out, three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Emily Skupp shut down Floral Park in the bottom of half of the inning to earn the playoff victory for Mineola.
The Mustangs earned its third playoff birth in as many years. They advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Mineola finished the season with a heart breaking 1-0 loss against Carey High School, who entered the playoffs as the number one seed. The Mustangs got six innings
of superb pitching from Emily Skupp along with stellar defense from the Lady Mustangs. Mineola bats could not break through against Jenna Turato of Carey to get the equalizer in a tight game which featured great pitching from both teams.
