FC Mineola Wins Two

The BU10 FC Mineola opened league play with 3-0 win over the Hewlett Lawrence Blue Sonic on April 3. Mineola was led by Liam Going (two goals and an assist). The first goal came off a beautiful cross from Liam Russelman that Going sent to the back of the net.  Fifteen minutes later the Liam to Liam connection struck again when Russelman found Going open at the top of the box for another shot and score by the talented Mineola player.

Mineola’s final goal came midway through the second half as Gregory Kenney redirected a good cross past the Hewlett goalie. The back line of Peter Murphy, Luke Sommese and Brent Muessig controlled the defensive end of the field limiting the number of shots Hewlett took on goal and the few that made it through were gobbled up by keeper Andrew Pizzardi. Brian Heckelman, Phil Macchietto and James Teadore all contributed with stellar play at the midfield position.

FC Mineola Continues To Win

FC Mineola continued its winning start to the season with a 4-1 victory over the Island Trees Bulldogs on a windy day in Levittown on April 5. Mineola played into the wind during the first half and conceded a wind-aided goal midway through the half.  Minutes before the midway break, Greg Kenney  pushed the ball forward along the right sideline where teammate Liam Going took the ball in stride, cut nicely towards the middle of the field before drilling a hard low shot into the near corner of the net.

Kenney jumped on a short goal kick from the Bulldogs and raced in on goal before carefully tucking a shot into the far corner. Moments later, a loose ball blew to the top of the Island Trees penalty area where Mineola’s Liam Russelman drilled a missile of a shot over the outstretched hands of the keeper, off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal.

Mineola’s fourth score came from striker Mattheus Silva, who challenged and eventually took the ball away from the Bulldogs keeper. Silva then touched a nice pass to Going for a quick tap in to close the scoring.  Mineola’s defensive efforts were led by fullbacks

Chris Feathers and Luke Sommese, with keeper Andrew Pizzardi making several difficult saves.

Renaissance Fall To Nutmegs

Shortly after conceding an early goal, the GU13 Mineola Renaissance drew even with the North Shore Nutmegs as Rachel Cooney calmly deposited a close-in shot into the corner of the goal on April 6. Cooney, perfectly redirected the Caitlyn Wetzel corner kick that scooted across the Nutmegs goal box.

Both sides played terrific defense from that point forward, with Jenna Cox, Stephanie Pereira, Caitlyn Long and Melissa Pereira leading the Mineola back-line, with goalkeeper Jillian Haller making several saves behind them. Mineola eventually allowed the game winner with 15 minutes left.

Lightning Shoots Down Stars

The BU16 Mineola Lightning followed up their round one Long Island Cup victory with a 2-0 win over the Woodhaven Rising Stars in their first league game on April 6.

Their defense, led by goal keeper Joe Martins and fullbacks Chris Alexander, Tiago Goncalves, Eric Pereira and Steven Faux rejected the Woodhaven attack. Kevin Vecchione broke the scoreless tie, stabbing the ball into the net off a long throw in from Steven Faux.

Joe Cucinella put in the insurance goal bending a direct kick from inside the corner flag and past the keeper. Midfielders Manny DeMatos and Alec Leitman had strong games.
