The Mineola High School Boy’s Winter Track team competed against conferences 4 and 6 at St. Anthony’s state of the art indoor facility recently. Senior Jake Tavernite and Junior Chris Mueller performed well in the 1600 meter run. Jake took second place overall, with a time of 4:46. His race came down to the last lap, and a breathtaking finishing, where he managed to defeat his long time rival from Friend’s academy.
Mueller ran one of the gutsiest races of his career, making aggressive moves with over 400 meters left to go. He finished in first-place in his heat, and 11th overall.
Mineola Wrestlers placed six out of 10 wrestlers in the finals at the recent Hank Paris Wrestling Tournament, coming away with two champions. After winning three matches, junior Peter McCormack lost a close match in the 138 pound final. Juniors John Clancy and James Rodriguez wrestled each other at the 152 pound final with Rodriguez coming away with the victory.
At the 195 pound match, juniors Anthony Sarno and Edien Hincapie went at it ,with Hincapie coming away with the victory. During the 220 pound match, junior Luigi Athan also made it to the finals where he lost a close match. In the 160 pound bout, juniors Kyle
Dunleavy and James Gerstner also did well, as did senior Jacob Escobar at 138 pounds, although they did not make the placing round.
Hincapie also won the award for most pins in the least amount of time, pinning all three of his opponents.
