The Girls U-11 Mineola Mini-Mustangs, beginning their Long Island Junior Soccer League season, used a strong second half effort to defeat the very talented Elmont Raging Fire by a 3-1 score. The Raging Fire scored first during a sluggish first half, off a crossing pass that eluded Mineola’s defenders. Three minutes later, Mini-Mustang Allison Lamonica broke free on the right side and drilled a perfect shot across the field and into the top left corner of the Elmont goal. The two teams headed to the sideline tied at halftime.
Mineola’s potent offense came to life as the second half began. Emma Feimer, off a perfect crossing pass from Annie Cripps, nearly broke the tie, but hammered her shot wide right. Moments later Casey Conners, deftly dribbling through the Elmont defense, hammered a shot that the Raging Fire’s goalie expertly saved. With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Lamonica once again stormed towards the Elmont goal and just as she drew the defense towards her, Lamonica pushed a perfect lead pass off to her left that Christen Patalano deposited past the charging Elmont goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Minutes later, again following a furious scramble that saw Feimer narrowly miss another goal, Patalano drilled a loose ball into the Elmont goal, giving Mineola some breathing room.
The Mineola lead stayed intact, especially thanks to great team defense and the heroic goal-tending of Cara Kennedy. Making save after save throughout the game, Kennedy capped off the day with three minutes remaining by saving a blistering Elmont penalty shot headed for the top of the net. Mineola’s next game is September 19 at Garden City.
