The Mineola Wrestling Team took on Clarke High School on Jan. 9, with highlighted matches by Matt Long, winning by a major decision 13-1 over his opponent and Sophomore Kyle Dunleavy, pinning his opponent in 2:26. Sophomore Peter McCormack also wrestled a very tough opponent, but came up short by a score of 10-5. JV wrestlers John Clancy and James Rodriguez also won their matches.
The girls’ winter track and field team competed at its fourth and final developmental meet at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The girls competed against Conference 6 rivals as well as Conference 1 teams. Sophomore Jenna Pareti set personal records in the high jump and triple jump, with 4 feet 8 inches and 30 feet 1.75 inches, respectively.
Sophomore Debbie Gabbay improved in her first full season competing in the 55m high hurdles. She set a personal record with a time of 11.82 seconds. Amy Wetzel completed the 1500m racewalk in a time of 11:33.1.
The Mineola High School girls’ winter track and field team competed in the Conference 6 Championship at St. Anthony’s High School against 8 other schools on Tuesday, Jan. 15. A pair of fourth-place finishes from sophomore Jenna Pareti in the high jump and senior Jessica Azevedo in the shot put earned the Lady Mustangs eight of their 11 points.
Sophomore Amy Wetzel chipped in with a fifth-place finish in the 1500 race walk (2 points) and the remaining point came from a sixth-place finish by the 4x800 relay team of juniors Marissa Cotroneo and Caroline Mueller and freshmen Emily Skupp and Kaylie Braun. Junior Ansel Shibu and freshmen Ashly Augustine set personal records in their respective events, the 300m dash and 600m run respectively.
The team rolled a program-best 2516 series against Carle Place on Jan. 9, winning the series 8 – 3. Mineola won the first and second games games 821–795 and 872–760 respectively and lost the last game by two pins.
John Lusardi and Dylan Perro rolled career bests. Lusardi bowled a 667 series with high games of 258 and 245.
Perro bowled a 631 series with a high game of 259. Eighth-grader Tony Macchetta continues to maintain his 205 average. He bowled a 642 series with a high game of 248.
The Boys’ Basketball Team defeated Seaford on Saturday Jan. 5, 65–56. Dominick De Rosa sparked the Mustang offense with two three pointer to end with a 22–10 quarter. Strong rebounding by Thomas Behan and Bobby Rogers helped in the win. Malcolm Brown had 26 points and Brian Gaffney added 14 points.
Mineola Mustangs Boys’ Basketball defeated West Hempstead on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 78-65. Stephen Gessner’s three-pointer at the buzzer of the first quarter sparked the Mustangs’ offense. Malcolm Brown had a career high 36 points and Bobby Roger added 13 points in the Mustangs’ win. Dominick De Rosa sparked the Mustangs in the second quarter to finish with 12 points.
