Mineola Mustangs Varsity Softball Clinches Playoff Berth

Skupp strikes out nine Division batters in comeback win

The Mineola Mustangs Varsity Softball team (8-4) defeated Division (9-3) in a comeback 4-3 victory to gain entry into the League II Conference 3 playoffs. Mineola is the second seeded team and Division is the number one seeded team.

Pitcher Emily Skupp scored the teams first run in the first inning, and the Mustangs held onto that lead until the fifth inning when Division took over with three runs by Kim Beattie, Alexis Alvino and Julie Wielder.  With only two innings remaining, they had to act fast, and that they did.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Valerie Fischer hit an RBI-single to allow Christina Palmenteri to score to cap a three run inning.  This followed Palmenteri (1-for-3) who tied the game with a two-RBI single.  Now leading 4-3, Skupp struck out Division in the seventh inning, securing their win.

“We’ve played some really tough games this season, and they could have given up, but they didn’t,” said head coach Anthony Tramonte. “They’re a very strong team.  They took advantage of every opportunity, and they have the hearts of champions.”

Skupp, who is in eighth grade, had nine strikeouts.  Averaging seven to nine K’s a game, coach Tramonte expressed his excitement. “I have her for four more years, which is terrific,” he said.

Division pitcher Danielle Hafner had eight strikeouts.
