On Saturday Feb. 11, the Mineola High School wrestling program hosted the Nassau County Division II wrestling tournament. The top finishers earned an opportunity to compete on Sunday Feb. 12 at Hofstra University for the right to earn a County Championship title in their respective weight classes and a trip to the State Tournament in Albany.
Under the tutelage of head coach Dan Guido and assistants Frank Massaro and Joe Cerulli, the Mustangs advanced five wrestlers to the finals at Hofstra.Joe Massaro, Matt Long, Dave Gorry, Peter McCormack and Willie Cashin all advanced to the final match. McCormack and Cashin gave their all but came up just short of a title as Cashin lost 12-8 to Jordan Formicola of Locust Valley High School and McCormack was pinned by Hunter Dusold, also from Locust Valley.
Long won the 138 lb. weight class by defeating Mike Dusold of Locust Valley. Long finished the year with a record of 30-2 and was named the tournaments most outstanding wrestler.
Senior Dave Gorry defeated Zach Baron of Cold Spring Harbor, in the 195 lb. weight class and finished his year with a record of 19-9. Senior Joe Massaro defeated Yanique Webb of Locust valley to complete his senior year with a 23-10 record.
Massaro, Long and Gorry will represent Nassau County in the State tournament held in Albany on Friday Feb. 27.
