Mini-Mustangs Keep Rolling

Nov.13-The GU13 Mineola Mini-Mustangs improved to 8-0 on the season with a decisive 7-2 victory over the Rockville Centre (RVC) Rave. Six different Mini-Mustangs found the back of the RVC net, leading a balanced attack that moved Mineola within one game of finishing undefeated for the season.

With RVC taking charge in the early going, Mineola’s defense escaped pressure to clear the ball to Christen Patalano, who quickly directed the ball forward to Allison Lamonica ten yards from midfield.  Lamonica’s lead pass sent Emma Feimer dashing up the right side, slowing down only to line up a perfect shot past the RVC keeper for the first goal of the game.

Minutes later Lamonica scored back-to-back goals from inside the penalty area. By the 20-minute mark of the first half, Mineola had a 4-0 lead, with Annie Cripps drilling home a terrific shot from twenty yards for her first goal of the season.

The gritty RVC team did not back down however, and scored two goals of their own to make the game tight again. Before halftime, Mineola left fullback Brianna Lopes took a ball from Mineola’s side of midfield and embarked on a long run, weaving from the sideline to the outer edge of the RVC box before launching a hard shot that deflected off an RVC defender for Lopes’ first goal and a 5-2 lead for the Mini’s.

The second half saw a less frantic pace for both teams, with Mineola controlling much of the possession and netting two more scores from in front of the RVC goal, with Natalia Cotto and Brianna O’Brien both scoring their second goals of the season.  Midfielder Natalia Terezakis and forward Michelle Viola contributed strong games for Mineola, with each narrowly missing goals off a number of good chances.
