The Mineola Varsity Baseball team is coming off one of its best seasons in a few years. After winning a conference championship in 2010, everyone on the team is very confident because of last year as the team is returning many of its starting players.
These players include Jimmy Bulva (Captain), John Caputo, Ryan Jenkins (Captain), Nick Moran (Captain), Steve O’Connor, Nick Palma, Billy Sullivan, Tom Ward (Captain), and Craig Weber. It gives a team a lot of faith when most of its starters are returning to the team for another season.
This years pitching rotation will consist of three seniors, that being Jimmy Bulva, John Caputo, and Nick Moran. All three of those players received awards last year so more expectations are to come within these varsity veterans.
Head coach Helms Bohringer stated that this year’s conference is going to be extremely competitive and he also included that this years key match-ups are a three game series vs. Seaford, Clarke and Valley Stream North as well as a two-game series with Island Trees. Mineola’s conference consists of Clarke, Seaford, and Valley Stream North where Mineola looks like they can be leaning towards the top of the division by the end of the season.
Unfortunately, Mineola’s season got cut short in the first round of the playoffs when they lost to Valley Stream North after they had defeated them twice in the regular season. Opening Day will be at home against North Shore on April 4.
