Barbara Cronin-Stagnari of Mineola successfully completed the Caumsett State Park 50 Kilometer Run on Sunday, March 6. The Run served as the 2011 USA Track & Field National 50 Kilometer Championship.
The 49-year-old Stagnari navigated the course in 4 hours, 39 minutes, 47 seconds, good for 44th place overall; 41st place overall. She was presented with a special “Masters” Award as the 2nd Female age 40 plus to finish.
The course consisted of 5 Kilometer loops through scenic Caumsett State Park, with a view of Long Island Sound at the halfway mark for those who have the time and inclination to look to her left for it. Conditions were far from ideal, with wind and rain, some of it quite heavy at times, being the order of the day, making all the great performances that were turned in even more impressive.
A total of 91 runners successfully completed the 50K, and another 125 finished the accompanying 25K. Unfortunately, New York State Parks officials declined to allow the Run to utilize the Winter Cottage at Caumsett as the “Race Headquarters” as in prior years.
“Barbara really turned in a great performance at Caumsett,” noted Carl Grossbard, who chairs USA Track & Field-Long Island’s Mountain, Ultra & Trail Committee. “She and all the other athletes endured some pretty nasty conditions on the 6th, but they are the toughest of the tough.”
