Mineola Winter Sports Wrap-Up

The 2010 – 2011 Winter Sport season brought great excitement to the Mineola High School community. Student athletes found great success as they competed with exemplary sportsmanship and pride.  Several teams and individuals had great accomplishments.

The Varsity Wrestling team finished the season as Division II County champs. The team advanced eight wrestlers to the championships held at Hofstra University and saw Danny Granados, Steve O’Connor, Christian Euell and Matt Long win their respective weight classes and advance into the State Tournament. Both Euell and Long won a match at the State Tournament.

The girls basketball team finished their season with a 15 – 4 record and won its Conference Championship. The team earned a first round home playoff game vs. Wantagh High School.  In a tough and tightly contested game the girls defeated Wantagh by a point and advanced to the quarterfinal where they were eliminated by the # 1 seeded Division Avenue High School team.  Kerri Medlock led the team in scoring during the season.

The boy’s basketball team qualified for playoffs and hosted Jericho High School in the first round. The boys led the game throughout and held off a late Jericho rally to advance to the quarterfinal game against Manhasset High School.

Leading scorer Jimmy Bulva and guard Mike Wasczcuk missed the game due to stomach flu. Although the team fought hard they couldn’t overtake a Manhasset team that was at full strength
