The boys varsity soccer team heads into the second half of its season with their pre-season goals of making the Nassau County playoffs for a seventh consecutive year and contending for a conference title very much intact. The team has compiled a league record of 6 – 0 - 0 (8 - 0 - 1 overall) which is good for sole possession of first place in the conference.
The Mustangs opened the season with consecutive shutout victories over Herricks (4 – 0) and Oceanside (3 – 0) in the 13th annual Mustang Cup tournament. Mineola opened its league season at home with a 3 – 1 against visiting Floral Park and hasn’t looked back since.
After 1-1 draw against non-league rival and traditional soccer power Roslyn the Mustangs notched five consecutive league victories over Clarke (3-0), North Shore (5-0), Valley Stream North (2-0), Seaford (6-1), and previously unbeaten Island Trees (2-0). Individual highlights for the season thus far include county high 6 shutouts for senior goalkeeper Phil Ribeiro and the outstanding Mustang defense of Denis Lazo-Cruz, Joe Dores, Richie Forte, and Fred Muller.
On the offensive side of the ball the team has been led by junior midfield standout Christian Lird who leads the team with 9 goals and senior forward Marco Oliveira who has notched 7 assists to go along with his 7 goals. Junior forward Paul Sandoval has contributed 4 goals of his own to Mineola’s league leading 29 goals thus far with a mere 3 goals allowed. Coach Pereira is confident that the team will continue their winning ways in the second half of the season and as they head into the playoffs at the end of October.
The team will play Clarke High School on Friday Oct. 15th at Tully Park (Denton Avenue) at 7 p.m. for their annual Senior Recognition game. A schedule of games is available on the Mineola School District website (High School Athletics page) and www.lisoccer.org.
