It was hot on June 7 but the injury riddled Chiefs sixth grade lacrosse team didn’t seem to mind as they upset the perennial powerhouse Manhasset Indians 9-3 on their home turf. It was another nice job by the Chiefs’ coaching staff to bring their team’s 2009 winning record to 7-1.
On this day the Chiefs got the better of the Indians. Chiefs’ midfielder Thomas O’Connell had a monster day recording a hat trick with three goals and adding two assists. James Gerstner and Chris Lockwood each scored two goals apiece for the Chiefs while Peter McCormack scored a goal with two assists.
Midfielders Mike Patalano, Kyle Dunleavy and Gerard Boniello passed the ball around the field and out hustled the Indians 38-13 on ground balls. The Chiefs’ attackmen Anthony Sarno, Tom O’Dwyer, Marc Sarnell and Kyle Leinhart kept the pressure on the Indians’ goalie throughout the game. The defense of the Chiefs was all over the place, led by Gavin Dowd, Eric Pacher, Trifon Boniello, Jacob Correia and Teddy Capsis. Goalie John Clancy was again solid in net while making six saves to post yet another win.
All the boys played and participated in the victory. An injured Brian Smith was on the sidelines itching to get in there to play, as he cheered on his team to victory.
