6th Grade Lacrosse Defeat Manhasset

It was hot on June 7 but the injury riddled Chiefs sixth grade lacrosse team didn’t seem to mind as they upset the perennial powerhouse Manhasset Indians 9-3 on their home turf. It was another nice job by the Chiefs’ coaching staff to bring their team’s 2009 winning record to 7-1.

On this day the Chiefs got the better of the Indians. Chiefs’ midfielder Thomas O’Connell had a monster day recording a hat trick with three goals and adding two assists. James Gerstner and Chris Lockwood each scored two goals apiece for the Chiefs while Peter McCormack scored a goal with two assists.


St. Aidan’s Swim Team Captures CYO Championship

The St. Aidan CYO swim team completed yet another undefeated season, culminating with the championship title at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow on April 3.

The championship meet proved to be a night for the record books. Indeed, a total of nine CYO records were broken with the St. Aidan swim team breaking seven of the nine records, among the six teams that participated in the meet. A total of 46 events, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly were held. The final medal count for St. Aidan’s was: 24 gold, 17 silver and eight bronze.


Chiefs Rock Rockville Centre

After losing their first game in over three years, the injury shorthanded Chiefs sixth grade lacrosse team played at home at Hampton Stadium and rocked the Rockville Centre Cyclones 6-3. This brings their 2009 winning record to 6-1.

The Chiefs offense came from midfielders Thomas O’Connell, James Gerstner and Peter McCormack who each scored two goals, while attackman Chris Lockwood recorded three assists. Gerard Boniello, Thomas O’Dwyer and Mark Sarnell passed the ball around the field and out-hustled the Cyclones 27-19 on ground balls. The Chiefs’ attackmen Anthony Sarno, Michael Patalano and Kyle Leinhart kept the heat on the Cyclones goalie throughout the day.

Emily Glenn, T.J. Winters Named Athletes of the Year

Each year, the Mineola Booster Club holds a dinner to honor the Mineola High School varsity athletes who have committed themselves to many long hours of practices and games in the name of athletics and sportsmanship. These athletes have showed dedication and leadership and many have showed perseverance. Regardless of how the Mustangs teams ended up in the standings, participation has ensured that they are all winners.


John S. DaVanzo Mineola Pool to Open for Summer Season June 20

The John S. DaVanzo Mineola Community Pool will be opening for the summer season on June 20. From June 20-26, the pool will be opened 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. From June 27 until Aug. 21, the pool will be open on Monday, from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. and then from Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. The pool will be open from Aug. 22 until Sept. 7 from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Mini-Mustangs Win One, Lose One

The Mineola Mini-Mustangs girls U10 travel soccer team improved their league record to 5-0-1 with a solid 2-0 win over the MassapequaX-Treme on Saturday, May 16. Christen Patalano netted both goals forMineola, including one off a deft pass from Katie Russelman.  

The Mini-Mustangs’ defense once again had a solid showing.  In the first six league games this season, the team has allowed only three goals against.


Registration Underway for Summer Recreation Program

Registration for the Village of Mineola Summer Recreation Program has begun. The children’s camp program is for all Village of Mineola residents who are entering grades 2-8 in September 2009.

Registration forms are available at the Village Hall Recreation Office, located at 155 Washington Avenue.

Mineola residents can call the Recreation Office at 746-0750 ext. 268 or 237 for further information about the camp.

Carter Joins Hock as Adelphi Earns Historic Third Crown

Adelphi University Panther Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola High School Class of 2007) garnered the second Division II Women’s Lacrosse National Championship for Mustang alumni with a record setting 16-4 victory over Lock Haven University in Salem, Virginia on Sunday, May 17.

Mineola Mini-Mustangs Win Again

Christen Patalano and Allison Lamonica each netted hat tricks to lead the Mini-Mustangs to a decisive 7-2 win over the Rockville Center Raveat the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview. Lamonica’s strike in the third minute of the game got Mineola going. Patalano’s three consecutive goals came during the first twelve minutes of the game. Emma Feimer, off a sefless pass from Casey Conners, scored the final goal for the Mini-Mustangs, who improved to 4-0-1.

Undefeated Conference Season Provides Fifth Consecutive Playoff Spot


Seniors Emily Glenn (51 goals), Emily Kain (43 goals, 34 assists), Mo Phelan (34 goals, 11 assists), Melissa Pastoressa (24 goals) and Caitlyn Taveira (112 saves and an average of only 6 goals allowed) had something to prove this year and capitalized on their commitment.  

The Lady Mustangs take an unblemished conference record into the Class C playoffs looking to end their careers on a positive note.  With Junior Sami Stavish’s 61 goals leading the way, the girls automatic bid via the Conference II championship forces longtime head coach Frank Massaro to “skirt” steaks at the season-ending dinner.
