From the Desk of Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy - May 21, 2010

McCarthy Recognizes Clean Air Month

Each May, we recognize Clean Air Month, though, I believe that protecting our environment needs focus throughout the year. The environment is one of our greatest treasures and we have a responsibility to protect it for our children and future generations to come.

The 111th Congress is working hard to meet the critical challenges of clean energy, climate change, and air pollution—including the passage of a measure that I supported, the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which launches a new clean energy economy, creating 1.7 million jobs; helping to reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil by 5 million barrels per day; and requiring a reduction in the carbon pollution that is causing climate change from major U.S. sources of 17 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050, compared to 2005 levels. I call on the Senate to follow the lead of the House and pass a comprehensive energy bill so that we can move toward a more sustainable energy future.

Recognizing that America’s dependence on fossil fuels as an energy source is one of the greatest threats to the environment, I support efforts to develop alternative energy sources. I support a comprehensive energy policy that focuses on all available energy sources, reduces overall energy consumption through efficiency, and promotes new technology and practices.

In the last Congress, I was a proud cosponsor of the Energy Independence and Security Act. This important legislation included provisions to combat oil market manipulation, increase vehicle fuel efficiency to 35 miles per gallon by 2020 – the first Congressional increase in more than three decades — and promote the use of more affordable American biofuels.

Protecting the environment is vital to protecting the health of all Americans, particularly our children. I am working with my colleagues in the Congress and the Administration to fight for cleaner air, cleaner water, and the preservation of our natural resources, understanding that what we do today has an impact on future generations of Americans. I will continue to stand up for fair policies that protect America’s environment.
