As an avid supporter of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (R, C, I – East Meadow) announced that legislation which increases access to health-care benefits for emergency service personnel was signed into law today by Governor David Paterson.
“The brave firefighters who endanger their lives to protect their neighbors from fire and the hardworking ambulance workers who save lives every day deserve to have access to affordable health care,” said McKevitt. “I am honored to be a part of ensuring that this legislation became reality and I will do all that I can to formulate further legislation that supports these dedicated members of our community.”
The new law will allow municipal corporations, but not require them, to offer health insurance coverage to volunteer fire and ambulance workers, and would also allow these volunteers to buy in to the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP).
