Around The Town With Lou

Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace, a graduate of Adelphi University, have lived in Mineola for 59 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

 

The good news is that Yopp’s Service Station on Mineola Boulevard, which for more than 50 years has been repairing brakes, carburetors, alternators, tires and batteries, will again have gas—that’s good news for us that have trusted and liked Fred Yopp, as we did his dad and uncle.

Dr. Frank Johnson and his wife, Dr. Sarah, have been caring for people for 44 years. Frank is semi-retired, but Sarah, a pediatrician, is still holding office hours full-time. Frank and Sarah live off Herricks Road. Frank’s mother, who lived with them, passed away

recently at the age of 100.

Susan and Fred Otto are busy people. Susan works as a paralegal and Fred is in charge of maintenance at the Williston Park Legion Hall.

Ronnie Aveden is a newcomer. She has lived here just six years and is a retired office worker.

Robert and Anne Jarvis both went to Mineola High School. In fact, he played basketball for MHS. Robert now organizes class reunions for graduates in the '50s and '60s.

That new center aisle usher at Corpus Christi Church is James Petrowski and he works in Winthrop Hospital’s financial department.

Kevin Boland and his daughter Sarah were at Corpus Christi Church. I was disappointed that Sarah’s twin sister, Kathleen, was not with them, since she is so much fun to talk to. Kathleen, be sure and come next time.

Jay Leno says there has to be a better way of putting this, “The senior center will be holding an old bag sale.” He also noted that a butcher specializes in important hams. If you like them I guess you don’t care if they are imported or not.

Dr. Peter Langan of Willis Avenue lives in Garden City, not far from MHS. He is a member of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce and the Garden City Chamber.

Bob Costello of Clinton Avenue is a professor of criminal justice at Nassau Community College. His next-door neighbor is Chuck Martone. He works part-time with a bagel company and part-time in insurance.

Pat and Leo Cempa live in Albertson. Pat has worked for Mr. Jay for 33 years.

Andrew Reardon and his wife, Margaret, are long time residents of Mineola. Andrew is retired from Con Edison.

Albert and Eleanor Conte have lived on Roslyn Road for 50 years. Albert was a construction worker.
