The construction phases along Mineola Boulevard and Second Street should prove to have a positive end result once Winthrop has its new research facility erected on the northwest corner of the two intersecting streets; the essential gateway to the village. The Mineola American first reported the $60 million proposed project on July 20, 2011. It was approved on Sept. 21, 2011.
Passing the Nassau County Legislature as you head over the Mineola Boulevard Bridge, you enter the realm of the shopping core of the village, with little or no eye-catching structures. The primary focus of the facility will be concentrated on obesity and diabetes, two major issues in New York State and the nation. Winthrop has recently been nationally recognized in its research in adult and pediatric diabetes.
Hopefully, this structure will prove to serve as a beacon when drivers and passersby frequent our friendly village. My drive to work includes the bridge, and what a site it would be to have the sun shine on a new, pristine building as my car rolls over the hill, with people inside fighting an ever-growing problem in America today.
