Recently, I attended the Town of Hempstead’s Firematic Awards ceremony with Trustee and fellow firefighter Paul Cusato. The Town of Hempstead honored many firefighters and our own First Assistant Chief Jeff Clark was among them. Congratulations Chief!
The Halloween Party at the Community Center was great! The children were in costumes and enjoyed the rides, snacks, and food and the DJ. I want to thank Anna Athans and Marta DeSousa from our Recreation Department for putting it all together. Anna and Marta got tremendous help from students from Mineola High School, the Mineola Junior Fire Department and many village employees. They all worked together for another successful community activity. Great job to all those involved.
We had a rough snowstorm recently and it certainly could have been worse. Communities just north and west of us were very hard hit and many will be out of power for several more days. It could have been us. I will tell you that Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini had plows and salt and sand trucks ready if needed. Thankfully we dodged another bullet, but we were ready to jump in and begin working through it.
On Nov. 11, Village Hall was closed in honor of Veterans Day. At 11 a.m. that morning, there was a ceremony at Memorial Park where all residents were invited to come down to pay tribute and honor those who have served and continue to serve protecting us. Thank you to all of those who attended.
On Wednesday Nov.16, the Chamber of Commerce sponsored “Taste & Style of Mineola” at the Jericho Terrace. It was a night full of food from our local restaurants coupled with a fashion show featuring Mineola merchants. We are extremely fortunate to have such a vibrant Chamber of Commerce. All proceeds from this event went to local organizations so please come down and support the Chamber.
Thanksgiving is tomorrow. It’s a time of family gatherings and giving thanks for what we have. On behalf of the Village Board, I wish all of you and your loved ones a very special Thanksgiving Day.
Last and certainly not least is our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. There will be hot chocolate, snacks, songs and also a visit from Santa and his helpers. Please come down to the Community Center to help us kick-off this joyous season on Friday Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
Thank you, and I look forward to joining with you at these events.
