Around the Town with Lou: August 17, 2011

Lutherans are one of the largest Protestant communities in Mineola. A group of dedicated Christians met Sept. 11, 1921 to lay the cornerstone of the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour on Willis Avenue. We can recall Pastor Arthur Doege in the early days and Pastor Robert Mursch. The current pastor is the Rev. Albert Triolo. They also are home to the Children’s Noah’s Ark. On this Sept. 11, there will be a large commemorative celebration following religious services held at the Inn of New Hyde Park.

Moyous Outdoor Market was at the corner of Willis Avenue and Mineola Boulevard where KFC is located today. A few may recall this colorful spot with its bananas hanging in the windows and it’s many Greek and Italian specialties. Moyous closed about 50 years ago.

Larry and Sarah Cascio of Mineola dined at the Davenport. Larry is a retired French teacher and Sarah worked for the school system.

George Pappas of Lincoln Avenue is an aspiring actor. He has a small part in Gossip Girls. He will hold the door open for a young lady and she will say “thank you.” He hopes that he can say “you’re welcome.” That doesn’t sound like much, but it means he can claim a speaking part on his résumé.

Jay Leno spotted this headline about President Dwight Isen Howard. You remember him, of course, President Howard!

At the last meeting of the pool board, nobody came from the public, which happily means no problems. One woman did, however, tell me that the water was too warm in the pool and that the shower water in the women’s locker was too hot. The shower temperature can be regulated with the adjusting valves. The pool itself is largely affected by the intense heat of the summer. The two new pumps have solved the pressure problems. No more heated pumps. The new pumps cost a lot of money but they were badly needed.

All baseball fans like Derek Jeter – even the Met faithfuls. He has played for one team in one position for 17 years. How rare is that?
