William John Gregory died of cancer on Jan. 29, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA, at the age of 69.
A former native of Williston Park, William was born at Nassau Hospital in Mineola on Feb. 19,1939. He attended St. Aidan’s School and served as an altar boy. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1957 and received his B.A. in philosophy from St. Bernard College in 1961.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961. Upon completion of flight training, he was deployed to Vietnam and piloted helicopters in combat as a 1st Lieutenant. His military decorations include 13 awards and a Letter of Commendation from the United Nations. He was discharged honorably and worked as a commercial airline pilot and driver.
William enjoyed inventing and mechanics. He was a proud member of The Screen Actors Guild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Chilcott Gregory and Susan Victoria Dunn. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Dwight Davis of San Ramon, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Anthony Schmidt of Concord, CA; his grandsons, Dustin Schmidt and Keenan Davis; three sisters, Lorraine Corcoran of Bradenton, FL, Vivian Kramer of Fort Pierce, FL, and Jane Cashin-DelVecchio of East Williston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place on May 21 at 2 p.m. at the Columbarium in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale. Donations can be made in his honor to Fisher House Foundation.
