Obituary - Frank Vincenti II

Friday, 09 April 2010 00:00
Frank Vincenti II was born in the Bronx on Feb. 25, 1917, to immigrants from the D’Alta Gerone area of Sicily. In 1926, his father, Frank Vincenti Sr., opened the Barber Shop at 225 Willis Ave. in Mineola. Frank worked in his father’s business from the age of 9 onwards, attending Mineola High School, where he excelled in mathematics and graduated valedictorian in 1934. During the Depression Era, he left the security of his home and took to the road, walking from Long Island to the Canadian Rockies and back.  Frank settled down to work at the barbershop fulltime and in 1940 married Zina Sagone of Brooklyn, whose family hailed from the Regal Butto region of Sicily. They began raising their family in a house behind the shop and when WWII came, Frank supported the war effort by working at Sperry’s helping to manufacture military aircraft. In 1958, he moved his family to a larger home on Mineola Boulevard, where he indulged his love of gardening.  Frank retired from the barbershop at the age of 55, leaving it in the capable hands of his son, Frank Vincenti III. During his retirement, Frank enjoyed his growing family and spent a great deal of time reading, engaging in academic research and writing and publishing a number of books on linguistic philosophy and comparative religion, including The Spell is Broken, Knowledge in a New Dimension and The Last Daze. Following the passing of his wife late in 2008, Frank’s health began to deteriorate and he passed away in Monroe, NC, in January of 2010. He is survived by five children; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. There will be a commemorative gathering at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, at the barbershop at 225 Willis Ave., where Frank’s family and friends will gather to share their thoughts and memories. The barbershop is now in the capable hands of Frank’s grandson, Frank Vincenti IV.
