Helen Svoboda, formerly of Mineola, passed away after a long illness in Sun City Center, FL, on July 19, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband John, former leader of Boy Scout Troop 45 in Mineola. Burial was at Pinelawn National Cemetery, Farmingdale. She was active in the Eastern Star and a graduate of Mineola High School.

William Matthew Buehler, 84, of Kissimmee, FL, formerly of Mineola, died on July 4, 2011. Born on Sept. 6, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, William was a NYC firefighter, Engine 205, Ladder 110, Brooklyn Heights, NY, for 33 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and WWII. William was an avid fisherman, hunter and conservationist. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia Ann, daughter Mary Kay, sons William Matthew Jr., Christian Michael and John Hamil, sister Dorothy Brown, sister-in-law Virginia Buehler, eight grandchildren and preceded in death by his brother Richard Buehler. Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, 2201 Lucien Way, Suite 100, Maitland, FL 32751. Inurnment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. Arrangements under the direction of Grissom Funeral Home and Crematory, Kissimmee, FL.
Norman H. “Whitey” Morrow, 82, of Middletown, DE and formerly of Mineola and Dover, DE, passed away peacefully at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE, on June 28, 2011.
He was the loving husband of the late Margaret Mary Morrow of Mineola and Dover, DE; devoted father of Richard (Angela), Thomas (Sharon), Russell (Lorrie) and Sharon Giuffre (the late Anthony Giuffre); loving grandfather to Luke Morrow, Michael Giuffre, Theresa Vial and Jessica Morrow; loving great-grandfather to Emily Giuffre and loving brother to Robert Morrow of Milford, DE.
William A. Dekanchuk, of Mineola, passed away on June 10, 2011. Beloved husband of Elizabeth. Cherished father of Dylan, Jake and Hunter. Herbert Polak died on May 3, 2011 at Sunharbor Manor in Roslyn Heights after a long illness.
He was born on June 20, 1922 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His father owned a button factory that was started by his father. On May 10, 1940, Germany had invaded the Netherlands. On May 14, he escaped with his parents and younger brother on a Dutch fishing trawler and arrived in England two days later. They stayed until September, when they crossed the Atlantic to Halifax, Canada, and finally arrived in New York City on Dec. 7 to start a new life in the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in August 1949.
