Mineola resident Leo James Tomei, 90, passed away on Jan. 17 at Winthrop-University Hospital. His graveside ceremony was March 21 at the Long Island National Cemetery.
This hard working ageless man was born in Manhattan on Dec. 27, 1923 (the year the first Yankee Stadium was built) but then moved to the Bronx. As a long time Yankees fan having met all the greats sports figures, he then served in the 27th General Hospital serving in Burma/India/China in WWII as a private in the U.S. Army.
Lawrence M. Egan Sr., 81, of Mineola died on March 19. Beloved husband of Luba for 54 years. Devoted father of Larry (Anne Marie) and Michael. Best grandfather ever to Jason, Joseph, Robert. Dear brother of William, Thomas, Marilyn Catania, Lorraine and pre-deceased by Frank, Robert, Dolores and Justine.
Egan was part of the Hampton Street PTA and was also a former Mineola School Board o trustee. He helped Tom DiNapoli win his seat on the board (at that time, the youngest trustee in the State) when Tom was only 18 years old. Egan was a retired from FDNY fireman and worked at St. John’s University. In lieu of flowers, memorials to New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation at 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, NY 10475.
Gertrude I. Volino, 85, of Mineola, passed away on Feb 12. Loving mother of Philip (Cheryl), Linda (Michael) Zoccoli, Barbara, Michael (Rosina) and Benjamin (Sandra). Devoted grandmother of Kristi, Jodi, Justin Volino. Michael, Andrew and Robert Zoccoli. Kris, Jennifer, Kara Goodstein. Lani, Michael, Nicole Volino. Ashley, Benjamin, Brandon Volino. She worked for the Nassau County Police Department for more than 25 years.
Services were held at Cassidy Funeral Home at 156 Willis Ave. Volino was laid to rest at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Judith A. Vassallo (Passaro), 67, of Mineola passed away on Feb. 12. Loving wife of Raymond Passaro for 30 years. Devoted aunt of Lauren and Joey Passaro. Caring sister-in-law of Joe and Diane, John and Maria Passaro. Services were held at Cassidy Funeral Home, 156 Willis Ave. Mass was held at Corpus Christi Church in Mineola. Eugene Joseph Dugan, 91, an active mebmer of the American Legion No. 144 and VFW No. 1688 in Williston Park, passed away on Jan. 24 at his home in Reno, Nev. Dugan was born Aug. 31, 1922 in Flushing, New York to John and Margaret (Rooney) Dugan, immigrants from Ireland.
He was the last of 13 children, and was orphaned at the age of 2, and raised by his Aunt Jane Hughes and Aunt Rose Duffy (his mother’s sisters). As a young boy, Dugan was a golf caddy like most of his siblings at Deep Dale Golf Course. During his teenage years, he developed skills and worked on projects in the C.C. Camp in the State of Oregon.
Patrick W. Dent, 81, a 50-year Mineola resident, died peacefully at home on Jan. 14.
Beloved husband of 52 years to Claire. Cherished father to Kevin and Kerrie, Liam and Kathleen, Noreen and James (Dodson), Mairin and Michael (Ryan) and predeceased by daughter Meaghan. Adored papa of 14 grandchildren: Kailin, Alanna, Sean, Meaghan, Patrick,
Kara, Michael, Collin, Brian, Kiera, Lauren, Fionn, Seamus and Brigid.
Ressurreicao “Gloria” Dias of Carle Place died at the age of 88 on Nov. 28, 2013. She was the beloved wife of the late Antonio, devoted mother of Maria (Fernando) Lucas, Joe Dias and Teresa (Nelson) Ines. Loving grandmother to David, Stephanie, Andrew and Matthew and great grandmother to Emily, Ryan and Hailey. Also survived by her sister Carma and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral mass was held Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 at Corpus Christi Church. Interment was in Holy Rood Cemetery.
Margaret M. Oswald, 98, of Oxford, MI died peacefully at home on Nov. 21. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, her eldest son Robert, daughter-in law Carole and son-in-law Bill Bellairs. Oswald is survived by her children: Susan Bellairs of Oxford and Paul (Kathie) Oswald of Shohola, PA.
Oswald, the daughter of the late Augustine and Margaret Ziminski; was a 30-year Mineola resident and very active in Corpus Christi Church. She was born on March 14, 1915 in Hempstead.
