Bicycles And More In Mineola

In a time when a lot of mom and pop stores are going out of business to make way for bigger chains, there is a family business in Mineola that has stayed strong for almost 80 years. Mineola Bicycle, Fitness and Mower on Jericho Turnpike has been in business since 1935, selling the finest two wheel transportation and power equipment in the Nassau County.

“Our business started out in 1935 in a building on the northeast corner of Jericho Turnpike selling bicycles to residents,” said store manager Barry Dworkin. “In the 1950s, we saw there was need for more so we started selling power equipment and snow blowers.”

The building was moved to the opposite corner of the street in 1958.

Dworkin is a fourth generation employee of the store. He is the nephew of store owner Audrey Meinking, who took over the business in 1997 from her uncle Benjamin Rosman. He passed away this past March.

Mineola Bicycle sells all types of bicycles, including mountain, children’s, balance bikes and beach cruisers. The prices range from $99 for kids bikes to $10,000 for  the highest-end adult bikes.

They also sell other equipment, including skateboards, electric scooters, stationary bikes for home and office, spin shoes and cycling apparel.

The 8,000-square-foot store has two full service repair shops on the premises. The shop even repairs lawnmowers and snow and leaf blowers.

The store is one of the biggest Toro and Stihl dealers on Long Island, with a gold certified mechanic in Stihl products on staff.

There are always great deals to be had at the store and with the spring season upon us there are highlighted sales including 20 percent off on all cycling apparel and 40 percent off on all winter cycling apparel.

In 2010, The Mineola Bike Club made the store its official meeting spot. On Saturdays and Sundays, cyclists meet behind the repair shop to embark on four different rides throughout the county. Upwards of 100 cyclists meet to ride together on Long Island Expressway service roads and north shore routes and to share stories of cycling adventures with each other.

“It is a great way for bicyclists to get together in the heat of the season, ride through low traffic areas of the County and have a fun day with one another,” Dworkin said.
