The Village of Mineola has issued a request for proposals to develop property, known as Parking Field #5, which is currently being used as a parking lot. The lot is located on the east side of Third Avenue between First Street and Harrison Street.
The parking lot was once occupied by a garage that was owned by Winthrop-University Hospital, although the village owned the land the garage sat on. However, when it was discovered that the garage may have had structural damage, it was closed and eventually taken down. The Village of Mineola then retained the ownership right of the land and decided to pave it for parking, which is its current use.
However, Mineola Mayor Jack M. Martins wants to look at other uses for the parcel of land. At the State of the Village Address made by Mayor Martins last week in front of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, the mayor suggested the parcel of land could be used for a movie theater and hotel. “Personally, I’ve made no secret that I would like to see a movie theater/hotel combination for the area. Whatever is ultimately approved, let me be clear and unequivocal, it will be consistent with the Village’s overall redevelopment plan and the continued use of these opportunities to provide a boost to our downtown business community and long term relief to our residents and taxpayers,” Mayor Martins said.
Currently, the lot is being used for parking and bringing in parking meter revenue for the village. At noon on a weekday, the lot is filled with vehicles parking.
