Joseph Parrino, a first-grader in Ms. Wojis’ class at Meadow Drive Elementary won a Scholastic “Skippy Jon Jones Circus Contest.” He created an illustration for a new Skippy Jon Jones at the circus book. The book is titled: Skippy Jon Jones Cirque De Ole’.
There were many applicants and Parrino was one of only a handful of winners across the entire United States. Due to Parrino’s imaginative and creative efforts, each child in his class received a set of six Skippy Jon Jones books and a circus party to celebrate the launch of the new book.
At the party, each student was given a circus outfit, including a real clown nose, mask and hat. Additionally, Scholastic awarded his class with $100 toward party materials. The circus party was held on March 2.
The students created a circus illustration using only shapes during the party. They read and acted out a circus poem called Mr. Brown the Circus Clown. Students also used the poem to identify and spell rhyming words.
Classmates made a list of circus words and played charades and the students had to guess which word students were. A contest was held to find a list of circus vocabulary words in a circus themed word search and worked together as teams in order to find all of the words.
Students also created a circus glyph using directional words. Youngsters drew a clown and had to follow step-by-step directions with choices.
