Marianne Macrae from the Robin Hood Foundation recently visited Mineola Middle School seventh-graders to discuss how the more than $700 students raised to help with Superstorm Sandy relief efforts will be utilized. She thanked students for their donation and showed a short video clip about neighborhoods that were devastated by the storm.
Students read newspaper and magazine articles that discussed the devastation of Sandy and provided personal accounts of individuals who were affected by the storm. As part of their study of persuasive writing, they examined the controversy surrounding the cancellation of the New York City Marathon and wrote editorials expressing their opinions.
Wheatley junior Allison Chowdhury has been published in Tetrahedron, a scientific journal for the research she completed last summer. The article, “Microwave-assisted Diels-Alder reactions between Danishefsky’s diene and derivatives of ethyl alpha-(hydroxymethyl) acrylate and Synthetic approach toward a biotinylated anti-inflammatory monocyclic cyanoenone,” was published in the January 2013 volume. Chowdhury performed her work at Stony Brook University under the mentorship of Dr. Tadashi Honda and graduate student Suqing Zeng. She presented her research at the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair where she advanced to the second round.
The 1927 Academy Award-winning silent movie classic Wings will be shown at Chaminade High School in Mineola on March 23 at 7 p.m. starring Clara Bow, Buddy Rogers, Richard Arlen and Gary Cooper. Bernie Anderson, Jr. will produce a live theatre organ accompaniment.
The Kornreich Preschoolers at Hampton Street School recently went on a field trip to see Sesame Street Live: Elmo’s Super Heros at Madison Square Garden. The children enjoyed the ride in the Midtown Tunnel and being in Manhattan on the Hampton Jitney.
Over 50 graduates from Mineola High School’s Class of 2012 returned to their alma mater to share their college experiences with current juniors and seniors as part of the high school’s recent Alumni Day. Moderated by the Mineola High School Guidance Department, the alumni panel participated in topical discussions including the college application and decision-making processes, academic rigor and college life.
Panel members encouraged juniors to take the SAT and ACT exams multiple times, apply to colleges as soon as possible, and complete financial aid and scholarship applications in a timely manner.
