Troop 200 Honors Eagle Scout

Gerard DeAngelis of Troop 200 in Williston Park achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on May 15. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program. Earning the Eagle Scout award is no easy feat: Of the more than 115 million boys who have participated in Scouting, less than 4 percent of all scouts will achieve this rank. In 2012, the average age of a boy earning the rank was age 17.  

DeAngelis, 13, has been in scouting since he was 7 years old, first in Cub Scouts at Saint Peter’s of Alcantara School and later bridging to Troop 241 in Port Washington. After one year with Troop 241, DeAngelis wanted share his scouting experience with his two cousins (both Eagle Scoutd) and switched to their troop in Troop 2300.

 

Kornreich At LICM

The students in the Kornreich Early Learning Center at Jackson Avenue School recently took a field trip to the Long Island Children’s Museum and the Nunley Carousel.

The children enjoy these outings with their parents. This special program gives 3 year olds that little edge and a jumpstart to Pre-K.

 

Esquilin Takes Second Place

Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School announced that Mineola resident Melanie Espuilin and LuHi 10th-grader earned a second place finish on the Level 4 Hofstra University Spanish Poetry Contest.

The contest gave Long Island high school students the opportunity to demonstrate their achievements in Spanish. Students had the option of rendering an original poetic composition in Spanish delivered from memory or reciting a poem from a Spanish author.

Chaminade, Sachem Shine At Envirothon

Canon U.S.A., Inc. announced that the five-member teams of students from Sachem High School and Chaminade High School are winners of the 2013 Long Island Envirothon at Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage.

The Long Island Envirothon is part of the North American Envirothon competition, which is sponsored by Canon U.S.A. and is one of North America’s largest environmental education competitions. Participating students learn about their natural surroundings as well as environmental conservation and sustainable development.

 

Spanish Prowess Honored

Kindergartners from Hampton Street School recently took a field trip to The Long Island Children’s Museum. The children toured the museum and held a turtle. The children had a lot of hands on activities and learned about reptiles and insects.

 

Harvard Club Honors Aviles

Mineola resident Danilo Aviles has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2013” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. He was honored at a recent luncheon of the club. 

Aviles, who has taught at Wantagh High School for eight years, teaches High School Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Pit Band, and Percussion Ensemble. He also designs marching field shows and composes original percussion works for the percussion ensemble.

 

A Distinguished Teacher

The Harvard Club of Long Island named Mineola High School Eileen Burke a Distinguished Teacher of 2013 on April 7.  

 

Burke has been teaching English for 34 years, 25 of which have been at Mineola. She received her BA in English from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and her masters in reading from NYU.

 

Burke “particularly likes teaching juniors and seniors,” and feels a “responsibility to help them tell their story to college admissions officers.” For the past nine years, Burke has been co-director of the Falk-Sysak Student Service at the high school, the umbrella for the school’s community service and service learning programs since 2004.
