A Christmas boutique will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of New Hyde Park, located at 16 South 9th Street (south of Jericho Turnpike) in New Hyde Park. To learn tips that may help them navigate this transitional time together, parents are invited to bring their pre-teen or young teen (ages 11 to 14) with them or come alone to Winthrop-University Hospital’s free Parenting Today lecture, “Surviving Adolescence,” at 7 p.m. at Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd., corner of Second St. The program will feature various health issues, including nutrition and exercise; pubertal changes, HPV and gynecological issues; risk taking behaviors and emotional concerns. Jane Swedler, MD, and Elana Kastner, MD, will address the physical and emotional changes young people encounter, the choices they make, the impact on their health and well-being, and the role of a parent during this transitional time. The Town of North Hempstead’s annual Spooky Walk, complete with spooky trails, vampires, ghosts and goblins galore and not for the feint of heart, will be held Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Not-So-Spooky Walk, suitable for young children, will be held Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 484-8600 or 869-6311. The American Red Cross believes that the trick to having a fun Halloween is to knowing how to remain safe. To help children learn about safety, the Nassau Red Cross will open its doors for a Halloween Safety Party. Children, ages 6 to 11, are invited to participate in the event which will include carnival style games and a haunted house. They will learn what to do if a friend is choking; what to do if approached by a stranger; and other ways to remain safe while trick or treating. Children are encouraged to wear costumes; however, they are to be non-violent with no weapons, nor full-face masks. Admission is $5 per child and attendees must register in advance. There will be a screening of Phantom of the Opera (1925), starring Lon Chaney at the Chaminade High School Darby Auditorium, corner of Jackson Ave. and Saville Rd., Mineola, at 3 p.m. What makes it unique is that the film will have live theatre pipe organ accompaniment by Bernie Anderson Jr., an acknowledged master of that craft. Chaminade has the only theatre pipe organ in a public venue on LI. It has drums, xylophones, sirens, glockenspiels, and all the accoutrements of a theatre pipe organ.
