The Village of Mineola Board of Trustees will be holding a work session beginning at 6:30 p.m. and then a public meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Mineola Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue.
In response to the growing concerns of the community about the complexities of this year’s flu season, Winthrop-University Hospital will offer this free program at 7 p.m. at Winthrop’s New Life Conference Center located in the main hospital at 259 First St. The program will be presented by two of Winthrop’s world-renowned experts – one in pulmonary disease and one in infectious disease – who will provide an overview of the latest information as well as answer questions from the audience at the end of the lecture. Michael S. Niederman, MD, and Burke A. Cunha, MD, will discuss concerns. Parking is available in the visitor’s garage next to the Emergency Department entrance on Second St. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. The Mineola Board of Education and administration will be holding a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Mineola High School, 10 Armstrong Road in Garden City Park. The meeting will focus on the school budget, what makes up the budget, the district’s expenses and analysis of revenues.
Carol’s Cause, the Mineola-based 501c (3) not-for profit organization announces its plans for this year’s Peaches ‘N Cream Gala. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the Westbury Manor in Westbury. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m., followed immediately by the awards ceremony, sit- down dinner and silent auction. Mineola Chamber of Commerce president Ray Sikorski, past president Steve Ford and many of the chamber’s dedicated volunteers are organizing a fundraising event that will provide a gala evening of dining. Both “A Taste of Mineola” and “Mineola in Style” will be combined on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Jericho Terrace. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Mineola Library, Island Harvest, the Mineola Athletic Association, Mineola Auxiliary Police, Mineola Fire Department, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mineola Youth and Family Services along with new beneficiaries American Red Cross in Nassau County, Mineola VFW and Mineola American Legion.
The regular monthly business meeting of the board will be held Thursday. Oct. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. in the second floor staff lounge of the Willis Avenue School, located at 121 Jackson Avenue in Mineola. At that time, the board of education will open up the meeting and, if necessary, go into executive session to discuss specific personnel matters. The agendas for this meeting will be posted throughout the district and on the district website the Monday prior to the meeting. The public is encouraged to attend and comment on the reports.

The Community Church of East Williston, corner of Hillside Ave. (E. Williston Ave.) and Roslyn Rd., is having its first annual Giant Pumpkin Sale on the front lawn of the church, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thereafter, on weekdays from Oct. 19 through Oct. 30 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. On Oct. 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy a BBQ lunch and purchase homemade baked goods. Also on Oct. 25, enjoy the music of a local band, Fivestone, from 1 to 3 p.m. On Oct. 31, from noon to 4 p.m., there will be a Halloween party with lunch, costume parade and pumpkin carving competition – judging at 4 p.m. Half the proceeds from the sales will help the Youth Group’s project – Habitat for Humanity. Clark Botanic Garden, located at 193 I.U. Willets Road, Albertson, is ready for Halloween. The Town of North Hempstead’s annual Spooky Walk, complete with spooky trails, vampires, ghosts and goblins galore and not for the feint of heart, will be held Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Not-So-Spooky Walk, suitable for young children, will be held Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1, from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 484-8600 or 869-6311. On the day after Halloween, there will be a screening of Phantom of the Opera (1925), starting Lon Chaney at the Chaminade High School Darby Auditorium, located on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Saville Road in Mineola, on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. What makes it unique is that the film will have live theatre pipe organ accompaniment by Bernie Anderson Jr., an acknowledged master of that craft. Chaminade has the only theatre pipe organ in a public venue on Long Island. It has drums, xylophones, sirens, glockenspiels, and all the accoutrements of a theatre pipe organ. The console looks just like Radio City Music Hall’s organs.

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center.
