Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 58 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.

Three thousand people came to the Mineola Chamber of Commerce downtown street fair. We met Judy Flynn, Annabelle Burkitt, Edith Henrichs, Russ Miller, Christine Healy, Dr. Gary Levine, Dr. Lydia Valderrama, Greg Nold, Bill Greene, Chamber President, Elizabeth Rauert, Officer Nick Mosesso, Bernardette Vaskas, Frank Cassano, Gary and Sandy Pussey, Maddy Maffetore, Peter Henrichs, George Echeverria, Rev. Bob Koenig wrote that song for our centennial, “I Love Mineola.” He is a Mineola mail carrier and his wife is Jessica.

Barbara De Jose has lived on Garfield Avenue for 35 years. She worked as as bookkeeper in Great Neck for Dr. Holly.

Msgr. Robert Coyle of Corpus Christi Church spoke of the hope for Christian unity. He noted Catholic talks with Anglican and Lutheran leaders. This was also mentioned in the recent issue of the magazine, America.

Raccoons are driving us, and many of our neighbors, crazy. These fellows are not only raiding our garbage cans but digging up our lawns. Keep lids on cans firmly and raccoons don’t like noise or light. They are noctural creatures. We have been leaving lights on all night in our backyard, which helps.

Glad to see our neighbor Sean Burke is back to work following a painful illness.

What a good Halloween display the Mineola Diner had on its roof. With a horse and carriage, the cloaked driver is a skeleton. All parts are moving.

The Rosary Altar Society of Corpus Christi after Mass dined at Eleanor Rigby’s. Thirty-five women were present.

What a fine shop Richie O’Shea’s Irish Manor Shop on Covert Avenue is! Richie has everything Irish you could ever want – caps, sweaters, shamrocks, songs, cups, saucers and anything else between Galway and Wexford and Waterford.

Jay Leno found this memo from the coach, “I want to see more hit and rum plays.” Let’s keep them happy on the base paths.

Augie and Joanne Marcoccia just returned from a great trip of three weeks in southern Italy. They live on Burkhard Avenue. Augie is a retired truck driver.
