Editorial: Congratulations Adnan

It’s not every day when you get a letter answered from the highest house in the United States. Mineola resident Adnan Tapa, a fourth-grade student at Jackson Avenue School recently expressed his concern over world actions to President Barack Obama in the form of a letter.

This past summer, Tapa received a response from the White House that included photos of the first family and a letter thanking him for his interest and urging him to do his best in school.  I have to hand it to him; In fourth-grade, I wouldn’t have thought to voice my opinion to the leader of the free world and I commend Adnan for having such conviction, knowledge and wherewithal to call on the president to showcase his opinion.

Let this editorial serve as a notice: write your elected officials and write to those in power. You may get the answer you want.

News

Last year, the Mineola Fire Department initiated an Adopt-A-Hydrant program to offer residents and businesses an opportunity to enhance their fire protection by providing a simple service to the village, caring for a fire hydrant. The MFD is looking for adopters once again.

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth stopped by the latest meeting of the Williston Park Chamber of Commerce at the iHop in Williston Park.  Bosworth updated chamber members on the latest happenings in the Town including the proposed 2015 budget, the Veterans Advisory Committee, technology enhancements through the town website, mobile app and some new building department programs.  She also announced that the town will be partnering with the Small Business Saturday Coalition to promote the day on Nov. 29, to help businesses throughout the town.

Sports

After consecutive seasons of finishing runner-up in the men’s golf Player of the Year for the Skyline Conference, Christian Bleck of St. Joseph’s took home first place in a rather unlikely turn of events.

After a herniated disc caused the Chaminade High School alum to miss every event after the first week of the season until the conference tournament, Bleck returned—without even having the luxury of practicing a full 18 holes—and competed with the best players the conference has to offer.

Cross-Country Crowned Champs

The Mineola Mustang boys cross-country team won the division 4A championship recently at Bethpage State Park.  This is the first championship for the program since 1974, ending a 40-year championship drought.

Mineola defeated Seaford, who also entered the undefeated in division competition, 38-20.  Overcoming rain and high winds throughout the race, many Mustangs ran personal records for the 5K in route to the victory.
