Sally Patterson says she really misses Mineola. She was born in the village and went to Corpus Christi School. She and her husband Charlie were active in the church. Charlie was an usher. Sally worked for Bowne, the engineers, for 50 years starting when she was just 17. We wish them well in their new home in Virginia.

Msgr. Robert Coyle, pastor of Corpus Christi, noted that in the 50 years since Vatican II the number of Catholics in the U.S. has grown from 44 million to 67 million. On Long Island, from 400,000 to today’s 1.7 million. On the downside, we have fewer priests and fewer nuns. He said that there are four men in the diocese to be ordained this year. He also noted that Msgr. Eugene Murphy will celebrate his 60th year as a priest.

When my colleague Ron Scaglia wrote about Boston it reminded me of our honeymoon when Grace and I passed through that city. I went down a wrong way street and was immediately pulled over by a cop. I explained that we were on our honeymoon and was distracted. The cop said, “I’ll let you go this time, but don’t ever come back to Boston.” In the following years each time we passed through that city we always said we hope he’s not still looking for us.

Jay Leno saw a quote defending the right to bare arms. Get rid of those long sleeves! He saw another ad, “Stamp out literacy.” Doesn’t anybody ever proofread these things?

Reading over The Guide to Mineola, I would be remiss forgetting the help we received from our son Richard, later the executive editor of People magazine, now retired, our son Tom, later, CPA, and our daughter, Sister AnnMarie, now the director of communications for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
