Editorial: The Name Says It All

Memorial Park, home to quite a few monuments that honor present and past veterans, took a different focus yesterday on the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. It’s as if it were yesterday that smoke was billowing from Lower Manhattan after terror struck the Big Apple. But here we are, 11 years later and the memories are as clear as the sunny day that was upon the world until two planes struck the World Trade Center.

Stretching a full block from Jackson Avenue to Garfield Avenue and along Marcellus Road, the park garnered its name from the dedication of a monument in the center of the park to those soldiers fallen in World War I. A second plaque was added later to honor all of those who had served and perished in all American wars and military actions since the Revolution.

Another monument was erected just to the south, dedicated to those who died on 9/11. The park was originally dedicated in 1932.

War Dogs In Mineola

Almost everyone has heard the expression; a dog is a man’s best friend. These great animals guard, protect and shower people with their affection and undivided attention. They love unconditionally in good times and in bad. The strength of the bond between man and canine was put on display at the Mineola Library on Saturday, May 11 in JoAnne Raskin’s, ‘War Dogs’ exhibit.

Final piece of flood project approved

The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) approved funding for Nassau County’s part of a plan to address flood issues in Mineola and Carle Place, officials revealed on May 15. Mineola and North Hempstead’s portion of the three-part Bruce Terrace Flood Remediation Project has been ongoing.

Chiefs Defeat Garden City

The sixth-grade Mineola Chiefs (Maroon) defeated a very tough Garden City on the road 6-4 on May 12. With three players on injured reserved Mineola’s reinforcements played with all heart on Mother’s Day.

The Mineola defense controlled the game. Joe Carr grabbed the rock out of the air on crease slides at least three this game, Zach Koerber stopped ball on fast breaks while defensemen Evan Eberlein and Alex Marchiselli locked down the remaining attack men.

Winter Sports Wrap-Up

The Wheatley School announced that 15 student athletes have been recognized by Section VIII-Nassau County Interscholastic Athletic Association for their performance in athletics, scholarship and leadership qualities for the Winter 2012-13 season. The Boys Indoor Track team was crowned NYS State Scholar Athlete Team Champions. The Boys Varsity Basketball team won the Nassau County Class B Championship.
