It was a disappointing end to a great season as the Mineola High School basketball squad lost a quarterfinal match to Roslyn last Tuesday, Feb. 19. Playing at home in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Mustangs came out in a tough zone defense, keeping the high-scoring Bulldogs in check and only trailing, 18-15 at the end of the first quarter.

However, the Mineola attack came up cold in the second frame and Roslyn pulled away to a double-digit lead at halftime, an advantage they would never relinquish. The Mustangs had no quit in them as they rallied in the fourth quarter only to come up short in the 72-54 defeat.
Mike Waszczuk paced the Mustang attack with 22 points, including four goals from the three-point line. Brian Gaffney also scored in double-digits with 10 points.
The Mustangs advanced to the quarterfinal with an impressive 60-47 win over Lynbrook. In that game, also played in front of a packed house at the Mineola High School gymnasium, sophomore Steven Gessner had his greatest game ever, 21 points to pace the Mustang attack. Malcolm Brown and Bobby Rogers also scored in double digits as Mineola raced out to a 23-12 halftime lead while on their way to the victory.
Mineola finished the season with a 9-2 mark in conference play and a 14-5 record overall.
