The GU14 Mineola Mini-Mustangs used a strong second-half effort to overcome a slow start and top the Baldwin Panthers 4-2 on Oct. 14. Baldwin shocked Mineola early on, scoring two goals before the game was 10 minutes old.
Mineola rallied soon after, and began controlling the pace of the game and holding possession. Allison Lamonica got Mineola on the board minutes before halftime, driving a shot from 20 yards following a perfect lead pass into space by Emma Feimer. The Mini’s drew even minutes after the restart, as Brianna O’Brien deftly slid a cross-box pass to Natalia Cotto, who calmly drove it into the net. Ten minutes later, after an incredible save by Mineola keeper Gretchen Keller kept the score tied, Meghan Lafaye expertly dropped a free kick right behind the Baldwin defensive line, where Lamonica trapped it and after skillfully eluding the Baldwin keeper, deposited the ball into the empty net. Minutes later, it was Cotto’s turn again, receiving a pass from Lamonica and scoring from ten yards out. Mineola improved to 2-2-1 on the season.
The BU9 Mineola Mighty allowed a late goal by Manhasset in a 1-1 draw in a game that the Mighty controlled from the opening whistle on Oct. 14. Manhasset’s talented goalkeeper turned away numerous Mineola opportunities in the first half.
Halfway through the second half, Mineola finally broke through. Greg Kenney’s crossing pass found Liam Russelman in front of the Manhasset goal.
Russelman fanned on his shot but jumped on the rebound, poking it into the Manhasset goal. Minutes later Kenney drove a shot from distance that the Manhasset keeper stretched high to save.
Shortly after that shot, Mineola looked destined to score, with Jack Flood and Dominic Ferreira denied on back-to-back shots before James Teadore drove a rebound that the Manhasset keeper saved with his face. Manhasset seized momentum off that spectacular save and soon scored the tying goal in an exciting game.
The St Aidan’s fourth-grade boys soccer team had trouble finishing against the fifth-grade Our Lady of Lourdes team. Brendan Sullivan finally broke through for St Aidan’s, taking a pass from Evan Malik and driving a hard shot into the goal.
St. Aidan’s missed numerous chances later in the game as they fell to Lourdes 3-1. In their second game of the weekend, Danny Dunn’s usual tenacious effort paid off as he jumped on a loose ball in the middle of a crowd and looped a shot over the Holy Spirit goalkeeper to break a 1-1 tie.
Holy Spirit had tied the game earlier after Aidan Scott, off a perfect feed from Sullivan started the scoring for St. Aidan’s. Fullback Luke Sherry led St. Aidan’s, consistently turning aside Holy Spirit attacks with the help of his defensive mates, William Winski, Joseph Franzini, and Dunn.
St. Aidan’s Dylan Haase’s tireless effort in midfield inspired his teammates, as their team improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
