The Mineola Mini-Mustangs advanced to the semifinals of the Waldbaums Youth Soccer Challenge with a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over the Lindenhurst Lindy Liberty at Wilson Park. Competing in the Girls Under 10 Division, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie through two 25-minute halves.

The Mini-Mustangs fine defensive effort was led by Michelle Viola, Casey Conners, Jillian Palma, Meghan Lafaye and Shannon Durham.

Cara Kennedy's strong goalkeeping kept Lindenhurst scoreless until 10 minutes remained in the game.

Christen Patalano scored the lone regulation-time goal for Mineola following a spectacular run by Shannon Durham and off a pass from Katie Russelman.

After two scoreless five-minute overtime periods, the game went to a shootout. Emma Feimer, Allison Lamonica, and Meghan Lafaye scored on Mineola's first three shots in the shootout. Kennedy allowed only one of the first three Lindenhurst shots to get by her, setting the stage for Christen Patalano's winning kick.

Mineola now advances to the semifinals against an opponent still to be determined. Logo
