It is April and baseball is back in Mineola. On the weekend of April 3, 4, and 5, MAA hosted its first pre-season baseball tournament at the Mineola Little League fields on Willis Avenue. This was a fundraiser for the Mineola 11U Hurricanes travel baseball team who will be traveling to Dreams Park to compete in a week-long tournament in Cooperstown, New York next summer.
Competing in the tournament were East Williston, New Hyde Park, NPMYAC Raiders and the Mineola Hurricanes. After rainouts on Friday night, the tournament started on Saturday with the Hurricanes losing the opener to the Raider and the New Hyde Park pulling out a win over East Williston. In game two on Saturday, the Raiders kept up their winning ways with a win over East Williston and the Hurricanes got themselves on track with a win against New Hyde Park.
Sunday was just that, a sunny day and a great day for baseball. In the last games of pool play, Mineola held on to beat a tough East Williston team and the Raiders stayed perfect with a win over New Hyde Park. In the first playoff round, East Williston pulled the tough task of playing the Raiders and almost caused a big upset but the Raiders rallied back in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-10 win. Over on Field #2, Mineola played New Hyde Park in the battle of 2-1 records. Mineola was able to take the lead late in the game and hold off New Hyde Park for the right to battle for a championship.
Due to the rainouts on Friday night, the Mineola Hurricanes and the NPMYAC Raiders were named co-champions of the first MAA pre-season baseball tournament.
The MAA and the Mineola Hurricanes would like to thank all teams, players and coaches for their participation, all the parents of all the players for their support and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The true spirit of the tournament was to get the boys playing knock off the rust and have some fun. This was accomplished along with raising $1,200 for the Hurricanes' trip to Cooperstown.
