Longtime resident of Mineola, Gilly Serrado, 90, passed away on Jan. 23, 2009. Gilly came to Mineola at age 10 in 1928 and lived in our fine village her whole life.
Gilly was active in many areas in her life in Mineola. She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a teacher aide in the Mineola school system teaching the ESL students. Many of those students she met after her retirement would remember how she taught them how to read, write and speak English. Gilly also was a nurse working at Roslyn Hospital (now St. Francis) in the operating room before her teaching career. She also did some interpreting in the Mineola Court system.
Gilly had many friends and longtime neighbors whom she loved very much. She came to Mineola when there were only dirt roads. She used to reminisce about the old Mineola movie theater where she would see a double feature on Saturday mornings for a nickel and also received prizes afterward.
At age 80, Guilly never stopped learning. She took a computer course so she could email her family and grandchildren all over the country. She was a very active woman, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was an active member of the Golden Age and Leisure Clubs of Mineola.
She will be missed by all.
