New York State Senator Craig M. Johnson has been been named to the Senate Health and Education Committees, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith announced last week.
"Long Island has some of the best hospitals in the world that are among our top employers, as well as nationally ranked schools that need to be fairly funded to ensure that our children continue to receive the education they deserve," Senator Johnson said. "I thank Senator Smith for the opportunity to serve on these two vitally important committees."
These assignments follow Senator Johnson's appointment as chairman of the Senate Committee on Investigations and Government Operations, a powerful committee that is responsible for oversight of state government operations.
Senator Johnson will also remain a member of the Senate Committees on Local Government, Insurance, and Racing, Gaming and Wagering. As a member of the Racing Committee, Senator Johnson said his continued focus will be the redevelopment of the Belmont Park Race Track.
Senator Johnson issued the following statement in response to former Senator Michael Balboni's departure from Gov. Paterson's office:
"Michael Balboni provided a great service to New York State as the deputy secretary for Public Safety, just as he had as my predecessor in the State Senate. His commitment to the safety, all New York residents and his knowledge of the legislative process made him, a vital part of two administrations. I will miss him as my partner in public service. I wish Mike and his family well as they begin this new chapter of their lives."
