Sometimes I think that I must be the last stamp collector in the U.S. I have four volumes which amount to some 1,500 entries. Franklin Roosevelt made stamp collecting popular when he was president. Being confined to a wheelchair he was an enthusiastic collector. Years ago, The New York Times discontinued its Sunday column on stamps. I'm greatly aided by our daughter, Sister Annmarie, whose fellow sisters, many serving overseas, send me stamps from all over the world.

Good news and bad news from former Mineola residents Walter and Grace Weismantel of Florida. Their grandson, Marine Sean DeBevoise, was almost mortally wounded in Iraq and his survival was touch and go. After two years of rehabilitation, he is well enough to walk with a cane. He came to the Weismantel's at Thanksgiving. The bad news is that Walter continues to struggle with a long ailment and needs a cane and sometimes a walker. Our prayers go with this fine man.
